AS Rank: Data Sources

This page presents the BETA version of AS Rank, CAIDA's ranking of Autonomous Systems (AS) (which approximately map to Internet Service Providers) and organizations (Orgs) (which are a collection of one or more ASes). This ranking is derived from topological data collected by CAIDA's Archipelago Measurement Infrastructure and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing data collected by the Route Views Project and RIPE NCC.

ASes and Orgs are ranked by their customer cone size, which is the number of their direct and indirect customers. Note: We do not have data to rank ASes (ISPs) by traffic, revenue, users, or any other non-topological metric.

At the bottom of each data table we list the data sources used, in the following format:

data sources
attribute type date sources

attribute The attribute, or collection of attributes, whose data sources are listed.
  • name - The name of the organization that owns/operates the AS number.
  • country - The country listed as either the delegation country, organization address, or contact address, in that order, depending on which data is available.
  • topology - The collection of attributes that describe topological characteristics we can infer from the AS paths.
  • topology (router) - The collection of attributes that describe topological characteristics we can infer from the router graph.

type The type of data used.

date The date when the data was collected.

YYYY.MM.DD - Y:year M:month D:day

sources List of sources from which the given data was collected.
  • ARIN - The RIR for Canada, many Caribbean and North Atlantic islands, and the United States.
  • AfriNIC - The RIR for Africa.
  • APNIC - The RIR for Asia, Pacific region.
  • LACNIC - The RIR for Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • RIPE NCC - The RIR for Europe and parts of Asia.

  • IANA - An organization that oversees IP address, Top-level domain and Internet protocol code point allocations.

  • Potaroo.net - Geoff Huston's web site.

  • Route Views Project - University of Oregon project to collect global BGP routing information.
  • Netacuity - is a commercial service providing geolocation for Internet name and number resources. Used to supplement the AS organization and country names obtained from Potaroo and the RIRs.
  • GeoLite City - is a free database providing geolocation for IPv4 addresses. Used to geolocate the router topology.
